In the U.S., thousands of human resources (HR) professionals are hired each year. It is estimated that the majority of these professionals are HR managers and the trend is expected to continue through 2026. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that employment for HR managers is expected to increase by nine percent for the 2016-2026 decade, adding an impressive 12,300 new jobs to a group that’s already nearly 140,000 strong.
Because of the growing demand for talented HR managers, human resources management (HRM) has become one of the most popular specializations among MBA students. These programs, which are offered on-campus, online or in hybrid format, help prepare graduates to succeed in today’s competitive and rapidly growing field of HR management.
Before we let you in on just how much the average HR manager earns today, let’s take a look at what HR managers do and what a top HRM MBA program looks like.
What Human Resources Managers Do
Per the BLS, HR managers plan, direct, and coordinate the administrative functions of an organization. They oversee the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of new staff; consult with top executives on strategic planning; and serve as a link between an organization’s management and its employees. Some human resources managers oversee all aspects of an organization’s human resources department, including the compensation and benefits program and the training and development program.
In many larger organizations, these programs are directed by specialized managers, such as compensation and benefits managers and training and development managers. Some of the different types of HR managers include:
- Labor Relations Directors (also Employee Relations Managers)
- Payroll Managers
- Recruiting Managers (also Staffing Managers)
Labor Relations Directors
Per the BLS, labor relations directors oversee employment policies in union and nonunion settings. They draw up, negotiate, and administer labor contracts that cover issues such as grievances, wages, benefits, and union and management practices. They also handle labor complaints between employees and management, and they coordinate grievance procedures.
According to the BLS, payroll managers supervise the operations of an organization’s payroll department. They ensure that all aspects of payroll are processed correctly and on time. They administer payroll procedures, prepare reports for the accounting department, and resolve any payroll problems or discrepancies.
Per the BLS, recruiting managers, oversee the recruiting and hiring responsibilities of the human resources department. They often supervise a team of recruiters, and some take on recruiting duties when they try to fill high-level positions. They must develop a recruiting strategy that helps them meet the staffing needs of their organization and compete effectively for the best employees.
Regardless of the title, most HR managers work full-time, during regular business hours and many of these managers work overtime. In 2016, a third of HR managers worked more than 40 hours per week.

In general, HRM MBA programs take two years to complete, full-time. However, some schools offer accelerated programs that take less than two years to complete.

As of 2018, HRM MBA graduates can expect to earn $110,120 annually. High performers could earn $149,330 up to $197,720 or more. Those working in the top paying industries for HRMs could earn between $162,430 and $182,800.
